Research from Chongqing Medical University indicates that the type of coffee consumed may affect biological aging, the body’s estimated physical age as opposed to chronological age. This study analyzed nearly 50,000 adults from the UK Biobank and found significant differences between those who drink filtered coffee and those who prefer instant coffee.

Understanding Biological Aging
The study’s authors measured biological aging through three methods among 49,414 participants. The first method examined telomere length—shorter lengths indicate older biological age. The other two methods involved scoring metrics derived from standard blood test results to gauge the body’s functional age compared to chronological age. Results starkly differentiated coffee types: individuals consuming over three cups of filtered coffee daily exhibited biological age scores approximately 0.9 to 1.1 years younger than non-coffee drinkers, depending on the measure used. Conversely, those drinking more than three cups of instant coffee showed scores indicating they are roughly 0.17 years older on one measure, with similar trends across the other aging metrics.
