It’s not shaping up to be a great year for Horizon Organic. The dairy company has initiated its second recall affecting chocolate milk products this year—this time due to potential spoilage. Parents will want to take note before opening up a carton for their littles.

Which Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk Is Being Recalled?

Horizon Organic is voluntarily recalling 53,760 cases of its shelf-stable, 8-ounce 1% low-fat chocolate milk boxes. The chocolate milk was sold nationwide, and USA Today contacted Horizon to confirm which retailers received the recalled products; major chains including Whole Foods, Kroger, Target, and Walmart all sell Horizon milk products.

Why Is Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk Being Recalled?

The company initiated the recall due to a seal issue that may cause premature spoilage, according to USA Today. Be on the lookout for bloated or leaking containers, which could be signs that the milk has spoiled. Horizon says affected milk may also have an “unpleasant taste, odor, or texture.” No illnesses or hospitalizations have been reported.

This year’s earlier chocolate milk recall was initiated due to compromised package integrity and affected more than 60,000 cartons distributed across four states. It’s unclear whether the recalls stem from the exact same defect, but both involved packaging issues that could potentially cause the milk to spoil.

What Should I Do With Recalled Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk?

Consumers who have the affected product should not consume it. Horizon advises customers to discard the milk, keep their proof of purchase—including a receipt and any available packaging information—and contact the company to learn whether they’re eligible for a refund.
