Tempest Artisan Coffee Bar combines craft coffee with cocktails in a stylish Brownsburg setting, showcasing unique menu offerings and creative concepts.

Tempest Artisan Coffee Bar has made its mark in Brownsburg, a suburb of Indianapolis, since its inception in July. The space invites patrons with enticing aromas that blend those of freshly roasted coffee and innovative cocktails.
A Unique Atmosphere
At the heart of this unique concept lies a 30-foot, Corian-topped bar surrounded by a contemporary design that features walnut accents, set against 18-foot high ceilings. This environment enhances the café's vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere, combining modern and Art Deco elements with cozy leather seating areas for intimate gatherings. The visual appeal plays a significant role in attracting customers; it’s about creating a space where people not only enjoy their drinks but also enjoy being social. In an industry where ambiance can often be overlooked, Tempest has made it clear that aesthetics matter. This isn’t just a coffee shop; it’s a destination. And that’s what sets businesses apart in a crowded marketplace.
Design Philosophy
Co-owner Jonah Brooks is at the helm alongside bar manager Ocean Ode. In a recent conversation, Brooks explained their design philosophy: “We wanted to balance light and bright with earthy tones and darker moods to suit both coffee and cocktail experiences.” This thoughtful approach reflects a deeper understanding of customer behavior. People often have different preferences depending on the time of day; for instance, what feels right for a morning coffee might not resonate in the evening when customers may gravitate more toward cocktail choices. By melding these two experiences into one space, they cater to a wider audience and encourage repeat visits throughout the day.
Quality Sourcing and Coffee Crafting
With a commitment to quality sourcing, the café takes pride in its green coffees, procured from Indiana's Theta Ridge, JA Coffee, and Unblended Coffee. These beans are sample-roasted on a Nucleus Link before moving onto the production-stage roasting handled by a Coffee Crafters Valenta 7 in-house. By focusing on local suppliers, Tempest not only supports the regional economy but also ensures fresher ingredients, which many coffee enthusiasts value. This local sourcing paradigm provides a competitive edge, allowing them to offer unique flavors that large chains simply can’t replicate.
Brooks' prior experience with Kingdom Coffee, co-founded with his father, informs the café's operations and roasting techniques. This roastery supports both the coffee bar and a select group of local wholesale customers. Each cup of coffee on offer is crafted to stand out, tying directly into Ode’s cocktail creations, which emphasize natural ingredients and creativity. The partnership between coffee and cocktails at Tempest hints at a broader trend in the industry: as consumer preferences evolve, the integration of culinary elements is becoming increasingly popular.
A Menu with a Twist
The menu showcases a selection of indulgent options, such as panna cotta and Cuban sandwiches, alongside unique offerings like the Seoul Liège waffle, which melds flavors from Korean cuisine with the café’s signature style. Brooks revealed aspirations to expand the food offerings while maintaining a focused menu, stating, “We don’t want to crowd the selection.” This balance is delicate and strategic. A streamlined menu can often help ensure that quality is maintained in each item, and it allows customers to feel they've got a tailor-made experience every time they visit.
Espresso Equipment and Efficiency
For espresso, the baristas employ a 3-group Slayer Steam EP espresso machine, featuring innovative Markibar Izaga grinders for precision. To keep up with the demands of a busy café, pre-canned lattes are available, sealed using an Airosia machine. These choices reflect not just a focus on craftsmanship but also a pragmatic solution to operational efficiency. Offering options like pre-canned drinks without compromising quality means that customers can enjoy quality beverages even during rush hours.
Facing Competition
Brooks acknowledges the competitive pressure from convenience-focused chains, noting that they entice customers primarily through speed. He’s determined to offer a compelling alternative, asserting that the café can’t just compete on speed; quality and experience have to be priorities as well. “We need to find a way to appeal to that,” he shared. If you're working in this space, you'll recognize that this commitment to quality often garners loyalty—something quick-service options struggle to achieve.
Building Community with Events
To enhance the customer experience, Tempest hosts live music events, including a jazz series scheduled for the last Saturday of every month. Seasonally, a string quartet is expected to grace the establishment during December. This element of community engagement is clever; the live music acts don’t just fill seats—they encourage community spirit and offer visitors a reason to linger beyond just grabbing a quick drink. And yet, many might overlook just how significant this is in cementing a café’s place in local culture.
Employee Well-Being
Attention to employee well-being is a core value at Tempest. The business model aims to provide sustainable salaries, a strategy Brooks hopes will position the café for future growth—both in Brownsburg and beyond. “It’s an opportunity to provide a living wage for employees, with plans to expand to hire 17 to 20 more people at good rates,” he commented. In an industry where employee churn can be high, offering meaningful wages and benefits can attract and retain talent. A happy staff often translates to better customer service, creating a cycle that benefits everyone involved.
Implications for the Future
Tempest Artisan Coffee Bar stands at a crossroads that many new establishments face today: balancing modern, curated experiences with the need for efficiency and profitability. The café's commitment to quality, community, and employee welfare could serve as a model in an industry grappling with the pressures of rapid expansion and high consumer expectations. What's more, this philosophy might just inspire others in the industry, showing how prioritizing authentic connections with both customers and staff can create a sustainable business model. If Tempest can maintain its vision while navigating the complexities of growth, its future could be as bright as the drinks it serves.
