Bodum USA is recalling approximately 5.9 million French press coffee makers in the United States sold during a 52-year span.

The recall follows 70 reports of glass carafes breaking during use, including 48 reports of burns to consumers.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall today, Oct. 29, warning that damaged or cracked glass carafes can break unexpectedly during use, posing a risk of serious burn injuries.

In a press release also issued today, Bodum USA said that “while the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers.” (See Bodum USA’s full statement below.)

The recall involves 8-cup and 12-cup French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes from eight Bodum models: Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya.

According to the CPSC, the glass carafes can become damaged through the use of metal spoons or other metal utensils to stir coffee, potentially leading to breakage during subsequent use.

The affected coffee makers were sold from 1974 through October 2026 at Target, Walmart and coffee and home goods stores nationwide, as well as through Amazon, Bodum’s website and other online retailers. Retail prices ranged from approximately $15 to $65.

The Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most affected models and is engraved on the glass carafes along with product warnings. The coffee makers were manufactured in Portugal and Thailand and imported by New York-based Bodum USA.

The recall remedy does not include refunds or replacement coffee makers. Instead, Bodum is providing affected consumers with a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label. The company is instructing owners to immediately stop using metal utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafes and to avoid using carafes that are cracked or damaged.

Consumers can request the recall remedy through Bodum’s dedicated recall website or by calling 888-879-8213 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.

The full CPSC recall notice includes photos of affected coffee makers and additional product identification information.

Here is today’s statement from Bodum in full:

“As a family-owned business, Bodum takes particular pride in making household products – including coffee and tea makers – that are both high quality and affordable, and we have used that formula to benefit millions of families worldwide for the past 72 years. To maintain the trust and satisfaction of our customers, we pride ourselves in using high-quality materials and ensuring our products meet or exceed all relevant safety standards.

Given the emphasis we put on product safety, we take any reports of injury extremely seriously. That is why we are we are announcing a voluntary recall of certain Bodum 8- and 12- Cup French Press Coffee Makers with replaceable glass carafes in cooperation with the CPSC. This recall is an opportunity to reinforce warnings against using a cracked or damaged carafe and in particular, against using metal spoons to stir coffee in the glass carafe, which can damage the glass and lead to breakage during use. While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers.

We will be providing affected consumers in the U.S. with a free Bodum-designed plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label reminding them not to use metal utensils in the glass carafes. Going forward, these products will be sold with the plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label. As the North American market leader in this product category, Bodum is taking these additional actions to reinforce our instructions and warnings about the safe use of the product.

For nearly three quarters of a century, our company has worked diligently to create products that prioritize safety for the millions of customers who have come to rely on us. That trust is the bedrock of our company, and we will continue to earn it with every Bodum item we make.”
