A heavy-duty farm scale from American Scale Co. is expanding into the coffee industry, appealing to coffee producers and roasters.

Priced at $1,200, the LE Scale is a rugged wireless device with a load cell housed between two rectangular anodized aluminum plates, each 1/4-inch thick, and a carrying handle cut into the upper plate. The scale runs on a rechargeable battery.

The scale’s creator, Glen Hunt, is leading an effort to introduce the LE Scale to more coffee producers, while in September commercial roastery equipment seller Coffee Equipment Pros became the exclusive distributor to coffee roasteries.

Hunt told Daily Coffee News that the LE Scale evolved from the company’s Weigh-In Scale, which remains available for wrestling competitions.

“Our scale was used in the 2024 Olympic trials,” Hunt told Daily Coffee News. “From there, blueberry farms were our first venture out, and now we’re in a bunch of different areas.”

The LE Scale comes in two platform sizes: 17 by 13 inches and 12 by 13.5 inches, both 3.5 inches high. Buyers can choose a 100-pound-capacity version that reads in 0.02-pound increments or a 300-pound version that reads in 0.1-pound increments.

Weight data can be displayed on an optional wireless remote screen or through the American Scale mobile app. The scale can also send data to compatible roastery operations software on laptops or PCs via a wireless dongle. An optional bag rack accessory clips onto the surface of the scale for supporting upright coffee sacks.

After testing the scale on blueberry farms last year, Hunt recognized similarities to coffee harvesting. Kona Hills, a large-scale estate coffee producer in Hawaii’s Kona region, has since adopted the LE Scale.

“I saw the process for the harvest for coffee and the harvest for blueberries, and they’re almost identical. You pick the ripe berries, and then you get weighed by the pound for how much you pick, and then you come back in two weeks or so, pick more ripe berries,” Hunt said. “We made this scale so it was portable, battery-operated and waterproof, particularly for carrying out into your field.”

American Scale Co. is an independent Eugene, Oregon-based company that services, repairs and calibrates scales made by other brands while building and installing custom scales for businesses.

American Scale made its coffee industry debut at the 2026 Roast Summit in Portland earlier this month, where the LE Scale was used to weigh green coffee charges for live roasting demonstrations. The company plans to next display the LE alongside Coffee Equipment Pros at World of Coffee New Orleans, taking place April 9-11, 2027.
